History of Malta
Malta has been inhabited since 5200 BC and a significant pre-historic civilization existed on the islands before the arrival of the Phoenicians who named the island Malat, meaning "safe haven". Romans, Sicilian Arabs, Normans, French and British followed in taking over the reign of Malta, but the Knights of St. John left the biggest cultural, social and historical impact on this island.
Malta has been a member of EU since May, 2004.
